Ya Jerid El Nakhl El Aly (Oh Palm Leaf Flying High Above)
Composer: unknown Lyrics & Translation provided by: 1001 Steps - Arts & Culture Foundation
Transliteration reflects the Luxor region pronunciation as appears in the recording in which the qaf (ق) sound is generally pronounced as a g and the gim/jim sound (ج) is generally pronounced as a j (sometimes transliterated as dj as in "djamil")
Kohl: the dark lining used to enhance the eyes, a great beautifier. Sometimes you might see a hand gesture accompanying this line which mimics the shape of a eyeliner wing by pinching the thumb and first finger together (other fingers extended upwards) while pulling outwards from the middle of the eye (maybe also accompanied by a slight headslide side to side-pulling away from the pinching as the hand move outwards.)
"A stalk of a hundred ninety palm tree leaves, the bed of enjoyment" is a sweet and positive thought referring to the rural bed frames made of jerid (the stalk of the palm leaves) in which some people are used to living and sleeping throughout their lives, a familiar and cozy space. (Beds often multifunction as sofas and daytime recreational spaces for many baladi homes.)
Oh Palm leaf, soaring above, darling Bow down and say hello | Ya djereed el nakhl el aly ya habibi Mayel werme essallam |
Oh Palm leaf, soaring above, darling Bow down and say hello | Ya djereed el nakhl el aly ya habibi Mayel werme essallam |
Handshakes are no more Only hugs are allowed | Batal salam el ayadi ya habibi Bege sallam el-ahdan |
Oh Palm leaf, soaring above, darling Bow down and say hello | Ya djereed el nakhl el aly ya habibi Mayel werme essallam |
Come closer and say hello my love You have been away for a long time | Wagarab sallem aleya ya habibi Ya ghayeb lik zaman |
I survived the bullet But took a hit from this beauty’s kohl | Nafadet min errasasa ya habibi Sabne kohl edallal |
I drank the whole sea But it didn’t put my fire out | We sherebt elbahr kullu ya habibi Ana lam tafa li nar |
He is lying who says The lover can sleep at night | Kaddab yalli tgull ya habibi Elasheg fil leil yenam |
Even if his eyes sleep His little heart won’t | Hata en namet oyonoh ya habibi Geleboh lam yenam |
Her eyelashes are like a garden’s grass And her eyes are like coffee cups (wide)
| Remsh eeinha zarbi gnena ya habibi We oyounha fanadjeen |
A stalk of a hundred ninety palm tree leaves The bed of enjoyment | Miyya we teseein djerida ya habibi Sarrir dar ennaeiim |
Oh Palm leaf, soaring above, darling Bow down and say hello | Ya djereed el nakhl el aly ya habibi Mayel werme essallam |
Come closer and say hello my love You have been away for a long time | Wagarab sallem aleya ya habibi Ah a ghayeb lik zaman |
